GRANTS FOR WORK
COUNTY EXPENDITURE PROTGST SUPPORTED COUNCIL MEETING Authority for expenditure on bridge work in the country was received by the Cook County Council at the monthly meeting held to-day. The chairman. Cr. W. G. Sherratt, presided, the following also being present:— Crs. M. L. Holden, J. T. Gordon, G. V. Smith, J. E. Benson, M. T. B. Hall, E. H. Baker, F. S. Bowen, P. D. Tombleson, C. Tietjen, and S. T. Gray. The district engineer advised that approval had been received for an additional authority of £IOO, £2 for £l. being granted for the Waikura Stream bridge on 'Stafford’s road, by way of a transfer from the item of £ISOO appearing in the appropriations for Brunton’s road. Similar approval also had been obtained for the issue of an additional authority of £IOO, £1 for £l, being granted by way of transfer from the Cabstand bridge item, for expenditure on the Pakarae River suspension bridge.-—The letter was received. The efforts of the council in connection with the recent physical fitness week were commended by the Minister for Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, in a letter. Protest Supported The Waikohu County Council wrote supporting the protest of the council to the Cook Hospital Board with regard to the appointment of a radiologist at the Cook Hospital—The lette.was received.
The engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, reported that main highways construction and maintenance were proceeding as funds permitted and in the case of the Patutahi-Rere highway particularly, it was anticipated that additional subsidy for maintenance would be made available by the Mam Highways Board to enable the rough portions of the road to be attended to.
