ACTION IN DISPUTES TRAY E LIANG ALI ,O\Y A NCES PAYM ENTS RETROSPECTIVE Following a communication from the secretary of the Workers Union in connection with travelling allowances t'o surfacemen and other workers, all counties in the district conferred in the Cook County Council’s chambers recently, the Cook County being represented by its disputes committee. The matter was fully discussed and it was resolved to place before the worker’s representative proposals in line with those in force in the Hawke’s Bay County. A limit of variation was also decided upon. It was resolved that a joint disputes committee, consisting of the chairmen of the Cook. Waikohu, Uawa and Waiapu counties and the commissioner of the Matakaoa County should be set up. This resolution was placed before the council for confirmation and confirmed. It was further agreed that the chairman of any county who was unable to be present at any meeting should be empowered to appoint a deputy and that such deputy should be recognised as a member of the committee fbr any particular meeting for Which lie was appointed. Later in the day this committee met the worker’s representative and after a discussion the following rates were approved by both parties: —Motor car, under 12 h.p., 3id per mile; motor car, over 12 h.p., 41 d per mile; motor-cycle, lid per mile; bicycle, Is 6d per week; horse, 6d per day or if no grazing is provided, 3s 6d per week. By a ruling of the National Disputes Committee these payments are retrospective, on application of the worker, to December 10, 1936.
