FASTER SCORING

SIR J. CAHN'S ELEVEN MATCH WITH OTAGO DEMPSTER 117 NOT OUT (Pur Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. The sky was overcast and the weather threatening when Dempster, 49, and Oldfield, 7, resumed the first innings of Sir Julien Calm's eleven in the match against Otago, who made UU Leader was the opening bowler. Two singles to Dempster and an extra came from the first over. Groves took up the attack, Dempster adding three singles. Nimmo immediately relieved Leader and Dempster hooked him for a brace. Oldfield turned Groves round to leg for his first scoring shot. Dempster added a smartlyrun single and Oldfield took two from Nitnmo's second over.

Dempster reached 00 with a powerful off-drive off Groves. In the same over, Oldfield went out to a wellpitched ball, missed, and Mills removed the bails —four for 123. Jackson was the next batsman. He swung the first ball he received to thn square leg boundary. The batsmen were infusing more vigour into their play than was the ci|se yesterday, dealing confidently with the attack. Dempster, at GO, lifted Groves hard and low to Moloney, but the fieldsman dropped the chance. The batsman celebrated his escape by .'weeping the next ball to the boundary backward of square leg. next few overs produced three ■»r lour singles to each batsman. Nimmo gave way to Leader, and Jackson steered his first ball through the slip field for two. Dempster brought up 150 in 157 minutes. The scoring rate had accelerated. A full f oss from Groves was dispatched past point for four, and a stinging offdrive by Dempster for another boundary made him 79. Neither batsmen seemed to be troubled by the bowling. Dempster was looking for runs, but with the advent of Silver more difficulty was found in piercing the well-placed field. Three off Leader by Dempster gave him his 90, and saw 180 posted. He glanced Leader for a single, and another to Jackson resulted in the Otago total being passed. A pretty fine leg shot took Dempster to within three of his century. Elmes was given a trial in place of Leader. Jackson cut him for a single. and then off-drove him for another. Dempster reached 99 in Silver's following over. He obtained a single to fine• leg for his century, which had taken him 199 minutes. He had got his runs this morning in enterprising fashion, scoring' freely all round the wicket.

Moloney failed to accept his second catch of the morning, putting an easy one from Jackson on the ground when the batsman was 34, Two hundred appeared after 203 minutes. A sweet square-cut to the fence off Elmes made Jackson 40. Dempster pulled the same bowler round for a two with a fierce off-drive. Jackson reached 47, but two balls later he went out to Groves, missed, and was clean bowled. He had hit six fours, the partnership being worth 9C. Nimmo came back with the new ball when Maxwell appeared at the crease. Dempster relished the change, hitting two" fours. At luncheon five wickets were down for 228, Dempster being 117 not out.
