Memorable Dances

CVER since they astonished the world with their “Carioca” in “Flying Down to Rio,” Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers have created memorable dances. “The Gay Divorcee” has its spectacular “Continental” and its romantic “Night and Day” dance. “Roberta” presented among others, the “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” routine. “Top Hat” provided the sensational “Piccolino” and “Cheek to Cheek.” “Follow the Fleet” brought “Face the Music” and “Let Yourself Go” numbers. “Swing Time” featured the lovely “Swing Waltz” and “Never Gonna Dance,” and “Shall We Dance” revealed the romantic routine of the same name, as well as the Rhythm Dance.

Like all Astaire-Rogers vehicles, “Carefree” sparkles with dances. One of these, “The Yam,” is especially adaptable to ballroom routine, and is easy to follow, as is'the interesting “Change Partners” routine. An ingenious “Golf Dance” and a fantastic “Dream Dance” comprise the other dancing specialities.
