ROME ADVISES PARIS FRONTIERS IN AFRICA STATUS OF, NATIONALS NEW TREATY SUGGESTED (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Dec. 23, 10 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 22. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that it is understood that Italy informed France on Saturday last that the Franco-Italian 1935 agreement, determining the Franco-Italian frontier in Eritrea and Libya and the status of Italian nationals in Tunis must be regarded as void, since it was never ratified.
It is believed that Italy suggested that France should now submit fresh proposals complying with the London Treaty of 1915, which brought Italy into the Great War, under which Britain and France agreed (that if they increased colonial territory in Africa at Germany’s expense, Italy might claim compensation for Eritrea, Somaliland and Libya.
An Independent Cable Service message from Paris states it is officially stated that Italy sent a note to the French Ambassador to Italy, M. Poncet, stating that Italy no longer considered the Laval-Mussolini agreements as valid.
