THIRTY FOR PALESTINE (Reed. Dec. 5, 2.15 p.m.) JERUSALEM, Dec. 4. Dec. 5, 2.30 p.m.) JERUSALEM, Dec. 4. Mrs. Rosenbaum, the wife of a former leading Viennese physician, committed suicide at Telaviv on hearing of the desperate plight of her 26 relatives in Austria. JEWISH REFUGEE PROBLEM That New Zealanders were unlikely to display "that irrational prejudice" known as anti-Semitism was an opinion expressed by Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland, Professor of Philosophy at Canterbury University College, speaking at a meeting convened by the Christchurch branch of the League of Nations Union to discuss measures for facilitating the entry to New Zealand of refugees from Europe. "Is is commonly assumed," he said, "that the refugee question is a Jewish problem. It is bv no means wholly so. There are many refugees who find themselves without a country because of religious and political persecution. Many are Christians—Roman Catholics in particular—and many hold democratic political views. We should certainly, too, not be content to adopt the preposterous definition of Jews adopted by the Nazis. Anyone is Jewish in Germany 'who has had a single Jewish ancestor since 1800. It should be sufficient for us that these people arc refugees, in dire need."
