Reports from Paris state that 600,000 workers throughout France wer,e still on strike to-day. The dismissal of the labour leader, M. Johaux, and union leaders from State positions angered the workers’ organisations in Paris and it was feared that further strikes would result. The French Confederation of Labour issued a communique protesting against the “excess reprisals risking disorders." The national defence quarters express the opinion that the dismissals of Government workers will not exceed 8000 to 21,000. They admit there hqve been extensive lock-outs in private industries. Shipping Held Up Dock workers at Boulogne struct when told they had broken their contracts. Shipping, except the cross-Channel services, is held up. Action against the reprisals has already started at St. Nazaire, where 10,000 naval and civil shipyard workers struck after an announcement by the management that those who participated in the general strike would only be re-employed provisionally. The management also refused to receive delegations from the workers. Construction is held up on the 35,000ton liner Pasteur and the battleship Jeanne d’ Arc. A report from Valenciennes states that the police arrested Albert Thomas, a trade union leader, after a chase at the Denain works in which it is alleged Thomas threw paving stones. It was a sequel to a free fight when 5000 workers tried to prevent workers resuming. It is alleged that Thomas was responsible for the metal workers’ strike.
