CUP AND RAILWAY
EARLY SELECTIONS COMPARISON OF WEIGHTS ELLERSLIE—RICCARTON THE BUZZER FANCIED By “Trenton” Weights have been announced for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap and interest in these events should quicken from now on. A number of. horses engaged in these events were also weighted for the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap and the following table giving a comparison of the imposts should be interesting:— The Cups
Auckland Cup Pride of place has been awarded Padishah but he failed badly in the New Zealand Cup and now has an additional 81b. to carry. Willie Win was fourth in the New Zealand Cup and occupied a similar position in the Metropolitan. He is a proved stayer so must be considered. Argentic has been twice in a place hi the big two-mile event. He was second in 1936 and third last year. However, he is now in his tenth year rind little, if any, improvement can be expected. Wild Chase won the Fendalton Handicap and was second to Defaulter in the Canterbury Cup. The Buzzer, winner of last year's cup, ran a great race in the New Zealand Cup to be narrowly beaten by Arctic King. He has been raised 811). in this race but should again take considerable beating. Arctic King is reported to have trained on nicely since his New Zealand Cup victory. Round Up’s form up to a mile-and-a-quarter has been excellent and he may go on. He has earned the 8.8 he has been allotted. Mazir will only have to stand up to a solid preparation to have prospects. Trench Fight has yet to show that
he can run out two miles. Quadroon is handily-placed and shapes like a stayer. Wolan has won only two races since his Melbourne Cup success but staying is his forte and for that reason alone he is entitled to respect. Master Brierlcy is a stayer and in recent races he has shown that he is likely to show his real form at any time. Cerne Abbas was a failure in Australia but has proved herself at the distance and has had a chance to freshen up since her return. Just below the 8.0 mark there is a host of possibilities. Valamito, Malagigi and Knight of Australia all have good recent form. Francis Drake would only need to be well while Birthday Boy, Happy Landing and Parquet may be the best of the lightweights. Several whose names should enter into early calculations are:—The Buzzer, Kelly, Arctic King, Master Brierley, Mazir and Quadroon. The Railway Handicap A big field of sprinters have been weighted for the Railway and form is the guide available at present although 'work of candidates in the meantime may throw further light on the prospects. „ However, early fanciers may be selected from these: —Marie's Acre, Strclto, Llangollen, Paddy the Rip, Farland and Counterblast.
