ELECTRICAL PROGRESS

BRITISH DEVELOPMENT LONDON, Aug. 23. "During the last ten years the number of consumers of electricity has increased more than three times, from 2,008,000 in the year 1927-28 to 8,557,000 in the year 1930-37. Units sold to consumers increased by two and a half times, from 7,003,000,000 in 1927-28 to 17,147,000,000 in 1936-37," says the Municipal Journal. "Electricity distributed for lighting and domestic purposes has multiplied itself nearly fourfold, and electricity used for power has nearly doubled. As Mr. Burgin, Minister of Transport, mentioned in his address to the Electrical Association for Women, over the same period the average amount paid bv consumers per unit has been reduced by nearly one-half (from 3.99 d ocr unit in 1927-28 to 1.79 d per unit in 1930-37;. "The Minister said that the promotion of the wider use of electricity in the service of women, the collection and distribution of reliable information on modern electrical appliances and the demonstration of the benefits or electricity, all owe very much to the activities of the Electrical Association for Women. The striking expansion in domestic supplies over the last 10 years coincides closely with the widespread development of the organisation. The electricity industry now takes rank as one of our major industries. Invested capital amounts to £000,000.000, and 300.000 people are employed."
