France v. America
ALTHOUGH Hollywood still mainb - tains the lead in film production, and, to a large .extent, swamps the markets of the world, there is a rival growing in France. Although there is from time to time a great deal of talk about the progress of English studios. English output does not seem likely to be anything more than a reflection of Hollywood standard,
and the new invasion of England by American producing companies seems conductive of a further standardisation. The French films are •'another pair of sleeves," as the French themselves would say. Germany and Russia are dominated by politics, although good work is still being done in their studios. France is subject to no such disqualifications. The only thing which controls the French studios is French intelligence, with the assistance of the native artistic sensibility. The consequence is that French films arc beginning to invade studios everywhere. Of course, so far as this country is concerned. there is the language handicap.
