JILTED BY GIRL FRIEND
MAN'S ATTEMPT ON LIFE CONFESSION TO POLICE CONVICTION RECORDED Depressed 'by the fact that he had been jilted by his girl friend, a 21-year-old man made an attempt on aU life yesterday in Gisborne. When he appeared this morning before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Police Court the accused pleaded guilty to attempting to commit suicide and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within a year. His name was suppressed.
The story of the events leading up to the' appearance of the accused in court were told toy Senior-sergeant J. F. H. Nacnamara. At midday yesterday the young man went to the police station and told the watch-house keeper his tragic story. His girl friend would have nothing more to do with him and he had made a decision to end everything. He made certain preparations at his mother's home and placed his head in a gas oven, (but 'before he lost consciousness had realised the foolishness of his action.
His first act after that was to go to the police station and tell an officer. After telling his story to the police yesterday the accused fainted.
The accused was ordered to pay medical expenses amounting to £1 Is.
