Politicians' Salaries
Sir,—What is the amount of salary received by members of Parliament; commencing with the Prime Minister? Do they pay the same salary or wage tax as other workers? CURIOUS.
[The Civil List Act, 1920, authorises a saiary of £2OOO for the Prime Minister and salaries oi' £I3OO each to 10 Ministers. Reductions of 10 per cent were made in 1922 and 19:11 and a further reduction of 15 per cent in 1932. The last two "cuts" were restored in July, 193 G. In 1930 provision was made for the payment oi .tlliOO a year Jo Parliamentary Under-Secretaries. The Speaker of Ihe House receives £9OO a year, plus a sessional allowance of £IOO. and the chairman of committees, £(175. Members of Parliament were paid £SOO in 1920, but reductions were made subsequently. In 1930 the amount was restored to the 1922 level of .C 450. The Speaker of the Legislative Council receives £720, the chairman of committees £450, and other members £315. In addition, members of both Houses receive travelling expenses. There is no specific exemption from taxation, but the Commissioner of Taxes is emoowered to make certain deductions : n respect of honoraria.—Ed Herald.l
