WAIKOHU FLOOD DAMAGE
SUBSIDY OF £2730 EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS Receipt of advice from the Governnent regarding assistance for the .•estoration of flood damage in the Waikohu County is reported by Mr. A. !,. Hultquist, M.P. Under date of October 4, the Hon. Mark Fagan, writing for the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Sempie. stated that in connection with urgent representations made towards the end jf August regarding flood damage iuring Miy, June, July and August ie was prepared to grant £2730, £1 or £l, from the department's allocaion from the consolidated fund. Authority for that amount was beinj issued immediately, and the council .vcuid need to submit proposals before proceeding with the restoration work.
The Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. f. Armstrong, replying under date of Oc.cber 7 to a communication, from .he County Council regarding assistj.lC2 for flood damage repair work wrote: "While it is regretted that I am unable to approve of an increased subsidy, I have arranged for the district employment officer at Gisborns .o permit the council to employ unregistered men provided that suitable registered men are not available and that it is not practicable to transfer men from the existing No. 13 scheme full-time works."
