The great-grandfather, Mr. I'. W. Vowles, was born in Lyttelton 7!) years ago, the son of early English settlers, who had arrived in the ship Swiftsurc some years before. The family moved to Thames in the early sixties and engaged in goldn.ining Later they went to Brunnerton. on the west coast, coming to Devonport about 45 years ago. In :h;U time the family has seen many changes in the district, and scrub and gorse land along the northern side of the bon-'jgh has become a closelysettled residential area. Descent through the male members of the family is an interesting feature of their history. Mr. T. W. Vowles had an only son. Mr. T. W. R. Vowles, who in turn had one son, Mr. T. R. B. Vowles.
