DISCOVERY OF WRECK
COAST OF ARGENTINA POSSIBLY GERMAN CRAFT * P '' 1 BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 8. The Argentine Ministry of Marine announces that it believes a wreck found on the southern Argentine coast is that of the Admiral Karpianger. The German training barque Admiral Karpfanger, of 2754 tons gross, formerly was the Erikson barque L’Averiir, and was bought in 1937 by the Hamburg-Amerika Line, one of the two major German shipping companies, and renamed after a famous German sailor. She left Port Germcin, South Australia, on February 8, and, with her auxiliary engine, she should have reached Hamburg in May under normal circumstances. She was last reported from Cape Horn on March 1. Her master was Captain Walker.
The Admiral Karpfanger was bought from Captain Gustav Erickson for £17,700, having been .purchased four years previously from Belgium for £3500. The Hamburg-Amerika Line completely overhauled the vessel and fitted her with excellent accommodation for cadets. The barque was built 30 years ago by Rickmers, of 'Brcmerhaven, to 'be used ! by Belgium as a sea-going training ship.
The Admiral Karpfanger’s voyage was her first under the German flag. She had an auxiliary engine installed. She was a steel vessel, and had, for several years', been considered *o be the most beautiful and best-found sailing vessel afloat. Her best passage was from Port Victoria, South Australia, to Falmouth in 95 clays.
