THE QUEEN ELIZABETH

LAUNCHING THIS MONTH ELECTRICAL DEVICE LONDON, Sept. 8. The last plate in the hull of the new liner Queen Elizabeth, which is to be launched by the Queen on September 27, was riveted in place yesterday, 21 months and three days after the laying of the keel. Resembling the automatic timing machine employed to check land speed records, a combination of the “electric eye” and cinematograph will be used as an additional safety check in the launching of the Queen Elizabeth.

The “electric eye,” situated immediately opposite the stern, will photograph on a cinema film the movement of the hull, which has been marked with white paint, and the minutest hitch or deviation will be registered as the ship moves. The liner will be halted 200 feet clear of the end of the ways, a minute and a half from tl\e time the Queen presses the button.
