OBITUARY

An interesting link with the early history of New Zealand is reported in the death at Hornchurch, England, of the Rev. J. W. Eisdell. News of his death has been received by a Gisborne resident who formerly lived in Barking, where the late Mr. Eisdell was once vicar. This was the place where Captain James Cook was married to Miss Elizabeth Batts in 1762, or six years before he set out on his voyage of discovery which included the historic landing at Poverty Bay in 1709. Captain Cook's marriage certificate was turned up by Mr. Eisdell during his service there. Mr. Eisdell spent a portion of his early life in Australia as curate at Moama, New South Wales, from 1885 to 1887, and ,as missionary priest at Ivanhoe during the following two years
