(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day
Sir Charles Marr, Sydney, arrived by the Wanganella to-day on a short business visit to New Zealand. Ki an interview Sir Charles laid stress on the interest being taken in Australia in the efforts to develop the oil resources. He mentioned Newnes, where oil had been obtained froni shale for 25 years, but now largescale production was being attempted and a pipeline was being constructed to Parramatta, 100 miles away. Both the State and the Commonwealth Governments were financially interested in the venture, and it was estimated that in three or four years, Newnes would be able to supply 10 per cent of Australia's total oil -fuel requirements. There were also inch deposits of shale in Tasmania and uatural oil in Papua, and it was possible in time that Australia would be self-sufficient in oil.
