RUNCIMAN'S MISSION
MEDIATION IN PRAGUE
HOPES OF SUCCESS
SPIRIT OF CIIEERFULNES
(British Official Wlrelosa.)
Reed. 2 p.m. RUGBY, Aug. 2. Viscount Runciman left for Prague to-day to mediate in the negotiations for agreement between the Czech Government and the Sudeten German Party.
Questioned by journalists, he is reported to have declared his optimism, observing "It is no use going into a iob like this unless vou are cheerful."
Apart from the fact that Lord Runciman proposes to have preliminary talks with the Czech President, Dr. Benes, and the Prime Minister, Or. Hodza, on Thursday, and perhaps later in the week with the leader of the Sudeten Germans, Herr Henlein, it is reported that his plans are entirely open.
London newspapers of all political views, while recognising the. great difficulties of his task, unite in wishing the negotiations well.
