A further postponement enforced by the unfavourable weather and the incidence of sickness among schoolchildren is that affecting the annual ball of the Awapuni School. This function has been postponed indefinitely by the committee of the school. There were 2f> days during the past month on which rain was recorded at To Karaka and the absence of drying weather has resulted in an almost unprecedented amount of surface water about the township. The July total was 12.38 in. and the heaviest single clay's fall of 2.32 in. was on July 13. The monthly total has been exceeded only on four occasions since 1913, while the average July total for the 25 years is 3.93 in. Prior to this year the wettest, July on record was in 1930, when the month's total was O.GOin. The following are seven occasions on which the monthly totals of more than lOin. have been recorded:— March, 1914, 10.31 in.; May, 1914, 15.45 in.; May, 1916, 12.54 in.; March, 1918, 12.49 in.; June, li)2, r ), ll.SOin.; February, 1932, 16.21 in.; July, 1938, 12.38 in.
