AIR DEFENCE TESTS

1000 BRITISH PLANES

LONDON, July 20

For weeks Londoners have seen the sky paraded every night by aeroplanes, sometimes with searchlights illuminating them, in defence tests. It is announced that approximately 1000 warplanes will take part in manoeuvres over Southern England and the Midlands for three days, beginning on August 5. This is the greatest number of machines that has ever taken part in manoeuvres. The main objects will be to test air and ground dsfences against attack "from territory situated eastward of this area."
