PACIFIC FUTURE

ECONOMIC RIVALRY

WARNING BY PROFESSOR

BRITISH EMPIRE PROBLEM

STRICT CONTROL NEEDED

IMMIGRANTS FROM ASIA

(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.)

(Reed. Aug. 2, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 1

Dr. J. B. Condliffe, professor of commerce of the Empire Summer School, Cambridge, said the Pacific was bound to be the scene of great economic conflicts.

It would be unwise to open areas to indiscriminate, uncontrolled movements of people from Asia. The result, would be a setback to the Polynesians and also conflict in the Dominions.

He added thai it was improbable that the British races would continue to monopolise the advantages of these productive countries unless they were prepared to people and utilise them and co-operate with their Pacific neighbours.

The absence of methods of stabilising currencies and expanding trade operations and raising living standards would lead to another Imperialistic grabbing. A message from The Hague states that Netherland agricultural experts will go to Australia shortly to report on the emigration possibilities of farmers and skilled labourers.
