LOSSES OF LAMBS

MUD AND FACIAL ECZEMA GISBORNE FLATS PROBLEM Losses of newly-born lambs on the Gisborne flat country are, reported to be heavy as a result of the extremely wet conditions and the after-effects of facial eczema. A number of lambs on the flats at present are from ewes that were affected by facial eczema, and the lambs in many cases have been so weak that they have been unable to survive the cold and wet. Mud is so deep on most properties that farmers are having the utmost difficulty in keeping their flocks from becoming bogged, and a constant watch is necessary. Some of the lambs, and a few of the ewes, too, have died from this cause. Heavy mortality among newly-born lambs is reported also from Hawkc's Bay as a result of the week-end snow. "Dead lambs are lying everywhere," stated one Maraekakaho farmer.
