HARRIERS' ROAD RACE
GISBORNE AMATEUR CLUB LVEATTIE CUP DTSTAiXCtt The first distance for the Beattie Cup was completed on Saturday by members of the Gisbornc Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club. The course was over Barker's Hill and some good times were returned considering the bad weather and road conditions. The race resulted in a win fur T. Parkinson by 100yds from R. Beattie, with N. Thompson and T. Robertson filling third and fourth positions respectively. R- Beattie registered tastes] time with 23min. 39see. and .the oilier two placings were T. Parkinson, 24min. 3lsec., and J. Tangney, 25min. 11 sec. When tin- competitors made their final sprints it was seen that the handieapper, Ml'. F. L. Barker, had dune Ins work thoroughly. With the exception of the first place, all other competitors finished strongly and evenly. Blair and Patterson put up a line finish to dead-heat fo»- fifth place. Considering the conditions. R. Beattie's time compared favourably with the 22min. 52sec. registered by A. Scott in the Brown Cup race over the same course. Scott did not start .H Saturday's event. N. Thompson showed some of the stamina of which lie was capable and fully deserved his third place, while Robertson, who filled fourth place, also ran up to expectations. The race for the second distance for the Beattie Cup will take place on Saturday week on a cross-country course from Stanley road. The run next Saturday will take the form of a paperchase and will be from I(>9 Wainui road. All harriers are to meet there a! 2.15 p.m.
