DRIVE ON HANKOW
INVADERS' NEW BID THREE COLUMNS ADVANCE TOKIO INDIGNATION TONE AT WESTMINSTER (Klec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. July 30, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 29. A Hankow message states that the Japanese to-day launched along the north .bank of the Yangtse a new drive toward Hankow. Three columns are aiming at Taihu, a town of strategic importance 40 miles north of the river. The Japanese encountered the main body of the Chinese on the south bank of the Yangtse. Severe fighting ensued. The Chinese claim that they hit several Japanese warships, sinking one. A message from Tokio states that the spokesman of the Japanese Foreign Office said that the public of Japan were justifiably''indignant concerning the threatening anti-Japanese tone in the China debate in the House of Commons.
The theory that a threat of force would stop the conflict showed lack of knowledge, both of the situation and of Japanese psychology, he said. A further Tokio message states that Soviet troops crossed the frontier of Manchukuo north of Changkufeng and fired on a Japanese patrol. There were no casualties.
