NEW STREET LIGHTING

MAIN BUSINESS AREA

.MERCURY VAPOUR LAMPS

ADDITIONAL CHARGE £2BB

A plan of new street lighting in the main business area was adopted by the Gisborne Borough Council last night.

This decision followed the reading of a report of a committee meeting of the whole council with representatives of the Power Board comprising Mr. F. R. Ball, chairman of the board, Mr. R. P. Baigent, the secretary-manager, and Mr. F. Matthewson, engineer.

"Mr. Matthewson outlined a scheme providing for a new lighting system in Gladstone road from Derby street to the Post Office, and in Peel street from Read's quay to the Power Board's offices," the report stated.

"This will involve the installation of 30 lamps of the mercury vapour type, 20 in Gladstone road and 10 in Peel street, and the cost to the borough would be £2BB per annum additional to the present annual charge for street lighting. The capital cost to the board would be in the vicinity of £IOOO, and the annual charge to be paid by the council allows the board only a small sum for lamp replacements and supply of current. "In order to keep the charges down to a minimum the new lamps would be cut oft' at 11.30 o'clock each evening, after which hour the street would be lighted by the existing central suspension lamps.

"In answer to a question, Mr. Matthewson stated he considered central lighting was not satisfactory, and the system he proposed would be operated from the kerbside, the lamps being attached to existing poles. This system was in accordance with modern practice.

"Your committee decided to recomment the council to adopt the scheme as outlined by the Power Board's engineer, assuming the 10 per cent reduction at present in operation would apply to the additional annual charge."

The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, MP, did not think there would be any charge this year, and he believed the scheme to be a valuable one. The report was adopted.
