MOTOR TAXATION

MORE WANTED FOR ROADS

BOROUGH COUNCIL STAND

UNANIMOUS RESOLUTION

A unanimous motion was passed by the Gisborne Borough Council last night urging the Government to make available lor highways a greater amount of money secured from motor taxation.

The resolution followed the reading of a request from the Canterbury Progress League to support a proposal that the Government be asked to apply the whole of the revenue from motor taxation for highway purposes.

"This seems to be quite a reasonable request," said the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., "and I am prepared to move that we endorse the request. I believe that more of the money secured from motor taxation could be used on highways."

Cr. J. H. Hall: I agree with the principle of it, but the income from motor taxation might be so greatly increased that it might be too much for the upkeep of highways."

He added that the Government should not commit itself to place all the money from motor taxation for roading purposes.

Mr. Coleman said that the Government would not divert more money than necessary, and he did not think that any Government, whatever policy was supported, would place all the moto taxation at the disposal of the highways, but the council could take the stand, by supporting the proposal, that more money from motorists should go to roading purposes.

Cr. H. E. Maude said that so long as the highways were well kept the council should have no reason for supporting the proposal. Cr. F. Tolerton thought it was unfair that the motorist should be "stung" for the privilege of using the highways.

The Mayor: Not many other people us 2 them.

Cr. A. L. Singer said that everybody benefited by good highways by cheaper delivery of goods, It was decided to urge that more money from motor taxation should be diverted to highways.
