SUPERIOR TEAM-WORK

ENGLISH WOMEN’S TEAM

OTAGO BEATEN 9—NIL (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Though the Otago women’s hockey team played a surprisingly good game against the English women’s touring side on Saturday, the issue was never in doubt, and the superior team-work of the visitors won the day. The game resulted in a win for England by nine goals to nil. The Otago forward line was expected to be the weakest point, but it made an unexpectedly good showing. Had there been better shooting by Otago, the score would probably have been very different. Otago appeared to suffer from an inferiority complex at the start, for no other reason could be propounded for the many lost opportunities. The game was played at a fast pace for the most part, with the exception of a period in the second half when the heavy nature of the ground appeared to have a tiring effect on the players. ) The English women turned every opportunity to good account, but the Otago backs showed good defence, and Miss J. Anderson, in goat, saved repeatedly. England’s goals were secured by Misses P. O’Donoghue (3). J. Wright (31, P. Shelmerdine and J. Dowling one each. The visitors will leave for Central Otago on Monday morning and play a match at Alexandra on Wednesday.
