ASSAULT CHARGE FAILS
TROUBLE OVER RELIGION MAGISTEATE'S WARNINCI MAN'S CHANGE OF VIEWS (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The fact that the court could not adjudicate on religious matters, but settled questions of law and order, was stressed by Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., during the hearing of a case in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Eglon Sercombe was charged with assaulting George Graham and with trespassing on the premises of the Armagh street hall and refusing to leave when requested. After the hearing of evidence, the second charge was withdrawn and tho first dismissed, the magistrate adding a warning that if anything of the son occurred again, he would bind Sercombe over to keep the peace, or taKo some other action.
A religious community held meetings in the hall, said Sub-Inspector Packer. Sercombe had been a member of this community, but had changed his religious views. On the night in question, Sercombe went to a prayer meeting at the hall and brushed past the attendant at the door. The attendant had fallen and struck his head. They had tried to settle the case out of court.
