Writing for the Films

W/HERE does the subject of the film come from? Mr. Stromberg answers "Anywhere." Books—novels, memoirs, biographies—stage plays, the newspapers, an idea which may be summed up on one sheet of paper; a film subject may come from any source at all. Nowadays more money is paid for the film rights of stage plays than for any other kind of screen material. And the skilled screen writer' is indispensable. He (or she) is a writer apart. Some novelists and playwrights have succeeded as scenarists, but many more—and among them some very lamous names—have been hopeless failures at this work.

One of the most distinguished writers for the cinema is a woman. This is Miss Frances Marion. Like Mr. Stromberg, she graduated to films through the newspaper field, and she is reputed to have sold original stories to the value of £200,000 to film producers during her Hollywood career.
