Norma Shearer Nervous
WITH other stars, other methods. Norma Shearer, Mr. Cukor says, is a nervous, highly self-critical woman. Although she has schooled herself to give an impression of self-confidence, she Is
far from confident, and is always severely criticising her own work. A woman of such a temperament needs sympathy and assurance. "The greatest joy of wodking with Miss Shearer comes from her complete lack of vanity."
With her a director has to reverse the normal process of inspiring his star to
greater efforts: she becomes so engrossed in her work, so keyed up with a taut, nervous energy, that she has to be restrained lest she overtax iter strength. She will play a long, exhaustive scene over and over again without appearing to lose an atom of her freshness and verve: then, saying she I'eels fine, she will go to her dressing room and, collapse. That is why she has to be "nursed" by the director.
