EXASPERATING LUCK FAFNER'S MINOR PLACINGS BOTHWELL'S PROMISING DISPLAY JOLLY BEGGAR'S BIG TASK (By "Trenton.") Fafner continued his exasperating run of minor placing at Waverley and while he was decisively defeated .r the post, he beat the remainder jus! as easily. He appears not "quite good enough" as yet, but he will do better with age. Schooled. Bothwell was schooled over hurdle: at the Park on Tuesday and gave a promising display. For Te Rapa. Mr. R. Fenton has nominated Pan Robeson for Te Rapa, and if present intentions are adhered to he will make the trip. Not Reliable. Courtyard, who won both brush hurdle events at Riccarton, is not a particularly good horse, and also. rightly or wronslv. he ha- ih a . refutation of being rather unreliable. He can gallop well and mud does not trouble him. If in the humour he might win a race during the winter, but he will always have io be taken on trust. Royal Limoncl. A Palmerston North report state.that Royal Limond is training on the rignt way. The rumour published i- ■•■ t| ? '••'lvelf had nr solid foundation. He is to do some . .ig •„•..;. i.iudlc. 0.i0.i; i2Ckl.ii: steeplechase.'-. As a matter of fact, he may not be stripped for any crosscountry race before lie goes to the post for the Great Northern Steeplechase. Jumping Recruit.

Ponty won the Great Easier Handicap like a good horse. Once into the straight he was always an easy winner. At one stage in the Great Autumn Handicap it looked as if he was going to repeat his Great Easter

form. Running to the straight he was otit by himself, but once Dictate threw out a challenge he collapsed without a semi3lap.ee of a struggle. Hi: owners intend to jump him, and he might, have been put to the game thi. winter, but his win in the Grc-a. Easier ha." caused a p^.por.snu.... Retired to Stud.

Relative and Scarf Dance have ha; iheir last races and have been sen acme to ICoa.anui Stud. They shoul; prove valuable additions to the pad duck. The fact that Relative is '■>■

Posterity suggests that she Will be mated with the Colorado horse King master, whose first, crop will bt among next season's two-year-olds. Remember This One.

In Disdain Mr. G. Murray Aynslcy has got a "really good twe-year-jul but it is no certainty that he has no'. a speedier youngster in his stable. Thi: is the gelding by Robespierre fron Muff. He is called Rebellion and i: a very promising sort, but unfortunately he ricked a front fetlock joint last November and had to be spelled. He is a chestnut, and in their earlycareer he and Disdain were regularly sprinted together. The filly was always second in their little tests up to three furlongs. Rebellion is easily faster, but he might not hang on as well. He is in work again and may be given a race before going into winter quarters.

Much Improved. Alan McDonald has worked a vas; improvement in Power Chief since he look him over a few months back, and with continued schooling has sharpened up his jumping. Power Chief ran a fine race the first day of the Dannevirke meeting, and, as he is just the right sort to make good at the game, it looks as if he will be llstt.i among the winners before the white.' is over. Not Proficient.

Jolly Beggar has done a little 'choci. ing over the steeplechase fences in the middle at Riccarton. and his performances were not up to expectations. Ridden by G. Ridgway, who will ride him in his races, he was very careful at each jump. On occasions he only bucked over, in spite of vigorous riding. He was the same when first tried over hurdles, and it took a 10. of schooling to make a proficient jumper of him. No doubt with plen.v of schooling he will jump country after a while, as well as he doe; hurdles. He has not much time to learn before the Great Northern Steeplechase will be run, and it is the Great Northern double he will be asked to tackle. Out of Hacks.

Student. Prince won his way out of hacks at Waverley, but he will bi eligible to run out his hack nominations at Egmont to-day. He should be untroubled to make the grade in opei company, and his owner-trainer has him in first-rate order at present. His stablemate, Notium, has never in hi: career looked better than at present and he is racing very consistently. This was demonstrated at the Feildinc EaSter meeting. There are few beite sprinters in the province than Notium. when at his best, and he is in great order.
