THE WEATHER Last Night's Forecast , General Situation.—Pressure is high at Chatham Islands, but a rather deep cyclonic depression is centred near Auckland. A shallow depression is advancing also across the Tiisman.
Forecast.— Winds south-westerly, north of. Auckland, but otherwise south-easterly to easterly prevailing, from Nelson and Marlborough northwards, moderate t 6 strong generally and of gale to strong gale force in places, moderate north-easterlies over the rest of the country, but later changing to southerlies in the south. Seas: in New Zealand waters, rough to high north of Castlcpoiht, and becoming rough generally north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, elsewhere, moderate, but rising later in the south. Eastern Tasman: Winds variable,, bu,t moderate to .strong southerlies to south-easterlies predominating. Seas: Hough in places. Weather: Fine at first in the far south, otherwise, cloudy to overcast, and with rain at limes in most, districts, general falls from Nelson to Marlborough northwards and in ninny places heavy. Much flooding is probable in the North Island, especially in the eastern districts. Temperatures mild.
To-day's North Island Report
Overcast conditions were again general in the North Island this morning, with further rain south of Gisborne. Light to moderate northerly breezes were general. The barometer had continued the falling movement. Temperatures at 9 o'clock were: Auckland and Tauranga 67 degrees, Opotiki and East Cape 65, Gisborne 68, Napier 66, and Wellington 61. Rough seas were reported between Cape Palliser and Napier; elsewhere moderate or smooth.
Midday Forecast General Inference: A depression is centred south-cast of Wellington, but is filling up. A shallow depression is advancing also across the south Tasman Sea, but pressure has risen considerably over eastern Australia. Forecast: Light to moderate northerly winds prevailing, but backing to southerly after about 24 hours: Weather: Cloudy to overcast, with intermittent rain, but gradually improving. Temperatures mild, but cooler tomorrow. Sea rather rough to rough, but decreasing.
