MANY NO-BALLS

UNLUCKY BOWLER AUSTRALIANS’ BIG LEAD 541 TO 268 RUNS WORCESTER FOLLOWS ON ONE WICKET DOWN FOR 74 (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 3, 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 2. The first-innings score of the Australian cricketers against Worcestershire was carried to 541 to-day. In reply, the county team made 268 and followed on scoring 74 runs in the second strike for one wicket before the drawing of stumps to conclude the second day’s play.

The weather was cold, damp, and murky when the Australians resumed play to-day. Hassett was quickly into his stride, -driving Crisp hard to all parts of the ground. The second over yielded 14 runs. White was more subdued. The tally of 500 runs came on the board in 370 minutes of play.

Hassett was delightful with his footwork. He was caught at second slip off an outswinger from Perks.

A yorkcr from Crisp shattered White’s wicket and the remainder of the side was soon out.

Crisp bowled impressively through out.

Light rain was falling when McCormick opened the bowling against Worcester, sending down seven no balls, one of which struck Bull on the forehead. That player retired bleeding profusely and was replaced by Cooper. Laughter and shouts of “take him off” accompanied McCormick’s second over after he had been no-balled for the sixth time. Bradman consulted McCormick and an umpire. The latter showed where McCormick was dragging his foot over the crease. McCormick’s Unlucky Day McCormick despairingly tried to get into his stride, but was no-balled thrice more, making 17 no-balls. It was McCormick’s unlucky day, for in McCabe’s first over he dropped Lyttelton at second slip, a difficult low catch.

The Australian bowlers were handicapped by a greasy ball. Lyttelton and Cooper batted ndmirably, Lyttelton hitting O'Reilly for three fours in one over and reaching 50 after 66 minutes of play. He was out next ball. Though increasing his tally of no balls to 24 after lunch, McCormick was more impressive. He had two chances missed. Cooper, a sound young professional, batted for two hours. He hit seven fours. With the dismissal of Lyttelton and Cooper there was a sharp decline in the quality of the batting. Fleet-wood-Smith frequently tied up the batsmen. Three Stitches Needed Bull pluckily reappeared with his forehead bandaged, having had three stitches inserted. He offered the only serious opposition among the remainder of the Worcestershire men. Bull was severe on Flectwood-Smith, who between lunch and tea bowled unchanged. Fleetwood-Smith in that period took six wickets for 62 runs He carried on for a further half-houi after tea until the innings closed after 220 minutes.

Fleetwood-Smith was punished by Lyttelton, Cooper and Bull, but he had the other batsmen in all sorts of trouble and finished with a line average.

When Worcester followed on, (i 5 minutes remained for play. McCormick, after opening with two maidens, was no-balled twice in the thud over, twice in the fourth over and again in the fifth over, making 29 no balls to-day.

Lyttelton and Bull scored boundaries each from no bails in the second innings. Lyttelton, after a fearless hitting, played a hesitant stroke and was easily caught at square leg. Details of scores are:--
