THE WEATHER Last Night's Forecast General Situation.—An extensive anticyclone covers New Zealand, the highest pressure being over the northern part of the South Island. A very shallow depression is moving on to south-eastern Australia. Forecast: Winds light to moderate south-east-erlies prevailing at first about and north of Cook Strait, but gradually turning to cast and fiorth-east, light to moderate north-east to north over the South Island and freshening somewhat. Seas: in .New Zealand waters, rather rough with a considerable easterly swell north of East Cape, and rather rough at times in the far south-west, otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman: Light to fresh east to north-east winds and rather rough seas in the northern portion, moderate north-east to northerly winds and slight to moderate seas elsewhere. Weather: Cloudy to overcast in the Auckland province and the far south, with scattered showers or drizzling rain, otherwise fine, pleasant day but cold night temperatures, with light frosts in many places. Overcast and unsettled conditions were reported throughout the North Island this morning. Moderate to strong southerly breezes were general. The barometer had commenced a falling movement. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were: Auckland 58 degrees, Tauranga 68, Opotiki G2, East Cape (10, Gisborne and Napier 57, and Wellington 54. Rough seas were reported at Tauranga and Tiritiri; elsewhere moderate or smooth. Midday Forecast
General inference—An anticyclone is still centred east of the South Island, and has intensified slightly, but pressure has fallen somewhat in the north. A rather deep depression is located over south-eastern Australia. Forecast: Moderate but freshening winds between north-east and south-east. Weather; Dull and overcast with rain, and some heavy falls. Temperatures: Cool. Seas: Slight to moderate, but rising.
