LADIES’ NIGHT ARRANGED I The monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of the South African War Veterans’ Association was held in the R.S.A. rooms, Read’s Quay, on Saturday evening, Veteran I. Linden presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with those present standing in silence lor the late : No. C 331, Veteran William Elliott, of the 7th and 9th Contingent, N.Z.M.R., who had passed away since the last meeting. . Correspondence was received from Veteran J. Elliott, Opotiki, with refer- ; cnee to the late Veteran Dennis ■ Hickey, and information regarding other members resident in the district. The widow of a deceased member, : wrote expressing thanks for the efforts to get an extension of her pension. A photograph of the Gisborne detachment of the 3rd N.Z.M.R. was received from Mrs. J. B. Poynter. It was decided, to forward this to the Dominion executive, to be framed, and hung in the association's rooms in Lambton quay, a letter of thanks to be sent to the donor. Social Committee Formed I At this stage the chairman extended a welcome to several ladies, who had attended in response to an invitation to form a committee to run a social evening, to which the wives, sons and daughters of members, would be invited. After considerable discussion, it was decided to hold a ladies’ night, in place of the usual smoke concert and reunion, Findlay's rooms to be the venue, and the date Saturday, May 28. Several offers were received to provide items. Veterans P. Brady and J. Munro volunteered to procure the room, and attend to the catering, and Mrs. P. Brady, sen., and Mrs. I. Linden were appointed to the committee, i It was decided to follow the custom of years past, and hold the annual church parade on Sunday, May 29, when Vereeniging Day would be honoured by attendance at the morning service at Holy Trinity Church, at which the hon. ehaplin, Canon A. F. Hall, would officiate. The W.E.C.M.R. Band would be asked to lead the parade. The chairman stated that he had only returned to Gisborne that morning) and during his holiday had attended the Anzac Day parade in Palmerston North, and conveyed fraternal greetings from the members of that branch.
