BRITAIN’S AIR DEFENCES

NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 1.15 p.m. RUGBY, March 15. The Home Secretary, Sir Samuel Hoare, in making liis radio appeal for volunteers for the air raid precautions service, told his listeners that they could help themselves and each other and the Stat e to be prepared and that preparedness would make it impossible for a “knockout blow” from the air to succeed.

At least 1.000,000 active workers would be needed for the air raid precautions service in Britain and there was room for everyone who was willing and reasonably fit. Free men, he said, could give better discipline, if they made up their minds, than anything produced by authority.
