GROWTH IN MEMBERSHIP
CONGREGATIONAL CHURCi: REPORTS TO ASSEMBLY (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The annual assembly of the Con gregational Union of New Zealand was continued yesterday, when the assembly re-affirmed its allegiance to the historic London Missionary Society. It was decided, if possible, to release certain ministers for definite evangelical work. The assembly unanimously adopted a proposal for higher minimum stipends for ministers, and a sum was set aside for that purpose. The treasurer’s report revealed that there were credit balances in all accounts of the assembly, and the reeistrar’s report showed there had been an increase in church membership during the year. There was a decline in the number of Sunday School scholars.
In the evening a conference was held, the speaker being the Rev. H. L. Hurst, general secretary in Australia and New Zealand for the London Missionary Society. He spoke on the spiritual life of the church, and referred to the many signs of strength in the Christian Church. The Communist cry was “We are changing the world,” but so were Christians. By deepening the spiritual life of the church they were better able to do so.
