MID-AIR CRASH

TWO BOMBERS COLLIDE

U.S. NAVAL DISASTER

NINE OCCUPANTS DEAD

THREE OTHERS RESCUED

(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Feb. 4, rr a.m.) SAN DIEGO, Feb. 3. Naval headquarters announced that two of the navy’s largest air bombers collided in mid-air when 70 miles from shore, during manoeuvres.

A boat from the flagship Pennsylvania picked up four survivors, one of whom died in a hospital ship.

Eight bodies have been recovered

The planes were leading the massed fleet manoeuvres when the accident occurred after dark, one plunging in' flames into the sea and disappearing. The other broke up on striking the water.

AH vessels in the vicinity turned on their searchlights and lowered boats for an all-night search for other possible survivors.

Three hundred planes from tiro aircraft carriers Lexingston and Saratoga will join in the search at dawn.
