Workmen forming a road through the Short street subway to eliminate the Rangaroa railway crossing at Taumarunui unearthed a huge totara tree lying right in the centre of the track. A portion of the tree produced truck loads of charcoal, which was carted away, but there is still a heavy piece of solid tree left and this may have to be taken out by a hauler. Mr. G. Hooker, public works engineer in charge of the job, considers that some hundreds of years ago the Wanganui River must have had a bed through the town along past Rangaroa, and that the tree would be deposited there in flood.
