WOMEN IN THE CHURCH
HOLY ORDERS BARRED
ANGLICAN DECISION
LONDON, Jan. 28
Deaconesses will not be regarded or described by the Church of England as “persons in Holy Orders.” Although this had been recommended by a joint committee of the Upper and Dower Houses, it was rejected by the Lower House of Convocation meeting at York. “No one wants to discourage good, gifted and educated women. But I do not think the best interests of the church would be served if women were allowed to become ministers,” said the Bishop of Pontefract. The meeting decided finally that an exception might be made in women’s schools and colleges.
One speaker said that the very thought of a woman administering the chalice at Holy Communion made him shudder.
The Archdeacon of Warrington said he hoped that one day women would be admitted to the priesthood. Many supported him with cries of "Why not?”
