Captain E. J Spooner, D. 5.0., R.N., of H.M. Training Ship Vindictive, will shortly visit New Zealand. The appointment of Messrs. John Watson, William Carson, and John Connell Brown as examiners under the Coal Mining Act, for a further term of office, was gazetted last night.

Professor J. Rankine Brown, formerly of Victoria College, Wellington, will return from a visit to England by the Tainui, due at Wellington on February 28. Mr. W. McHardy Forman, formerly managing director of General Motors (New Zealand), Limited, is a passenger by the cruise liner Oronsay, which is due at Auckland from Brisbane to-da.v.

Messrs. C. Tietjen, A. McPhail, R. Campbell, D. Mills and J- B. Greig left Gisborne to-day to attend a meeting of ir.aize growers in Whakatene this evening. Mr. G. W. Armstrong left for the Bay of Plenty yesterday, and will be in attendance at this evening’s meeting. Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Muir, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Muir, Stafford street, left Gisborne this morning for Auckland. Mr. Muir will return to the literary department of the Auckland Herald on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Muir accompanied their son and daughter-in-law to Auckland and will return to Gisborne on Monday. Mr. E. Woods,, who is a teacher at the Seventh Day Adventist School, has returned to Gisborne after a trip to Australia. Mr. Wood travelled over 7000 miles and attended an educational conference, lasting 10 days, on the work of the Seventh Day Adventist schools. Mr. G. McDowell, a son of Mr. E. McDowell, Manutukc, also attended the conference. Mr. G. McDowell is now headmaster of the church’s school at Papanui, Christchurch.

Passengers who travelled by East Coast Airways’ service yesterday and to-day between Gisborne, Napier and Palmerston North included the following:— Gisborne-Napier: Mr. and Mrs. J. Sumersby; Misses M. Coleman, O. Salmon and P. Corrigan; Messrs. J. Martin, A. Geard and H. Bowson; Masters H. B. Williams, R. Humphreys, Sherwood-Hale and J. M. Williams. Napier-Gisborne: Mrs. M. Brown; Miss Hopkins; Messrs. D. W. Coleman, M.P., McCormack and Bosun. Gisborne-Palmerston North: Mrs. R. Porter; Messrs. P. Matheson and J. Lindsay; Master Porter. Ndpier-Palmerston North: Miss Wickman and Mr. Heberley.
