PORK AND BACON EXPORT COMPETITIONS JUDGING BY DR. HAMMOND To maintain the high quality oi New Zealand's meat production, the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board annually offers prizes lor the best lamb, chilled beet', porkers and oa< oners suitable lor export. Usually most of these classes of meal, alter being exhibited, and judged in the Dominion, are then shipped for display and judging by representatives of the meat importing trade at Smithfield.
This year, however, the board i tailing advantage of an unusually valuable opportunity a Horded by (he visit of Dr. Hammond, the eminent English authority on animal nutrition and meal quality, to have the final judging of the porker and baconcr entries at the last Royal Show done in Hie Dominion instead of at Smithfield market.
The Meat Producers' Board annually offers prizes at the Royal Show for the best two fat porker pigs most suitable for export, and lor the best two fat baconers of the type most desired by the British trade. The baconer entries also compete' for the Bledisloe Cup. which has been presented by Lord Bledisloe with the same objective. These two classes were judged at the last Royal Show at Palmcrston North, and all the entries will now be submitted to Dr. Hammond for judging at Palmcrston North on Thursday, February 3.
Farmers arc being invited, and the judging will be followed by a demonstration, and in the evening by a lecture. This will enable producers o 1 meat to obtain much information ol real value, from an acknowledged authority, regarding the breeding and preparation of all classes of meat for the export trade.

LARGE SHEEP OFFERING
FAIR AT VVRSTPIEDD (Special to tho Herald.) AUCKLAND, this clay. Drawn from practically all pastoral districts of the province, about 10,500 head of stock will be offered at the annual sheep and ram fair at Westfield to-day. The present figures indicate that the entry will fall short of last year's offering by about 500, but it is possible that these figures may be equalled before the sale begins at midday. Selected for stud and grazing purposes, drafts will be assembled from as far north as Hokianga and .Kaikohc and as far south as Taibape. Most of the stock, however, will be transported by boat from islands in the Hauraki Gulf, the principal ones being Waihekc and Ponui. One consignment of 500 is expected froin Great Barrier Island.

RISE IX BEEP VALUES With a short supply of ox and cow beef on offer, there was a considerable rise in the prices of.good quality cattle at the Frankton stock sale on Tuesday. A pen of prime Polled Angus cows and heifers realised up to CO 15s. while top ciuality steers reached £l3 10s.
A full yarding of both fat and store sheep was penned, but Tat wethers were not sought after and prices declined from last week's rates. Fat ewes also showed a decline, export buyers operating freely. A slight improvement on recent quotations was shown for store lambs and breeding i'Wi'S.
