BRITISH WAR PLANS
EVACUATION FROM LONDON
2,000,000 CROWDED PEOPLE
LONDON, Nov. 27
If war comes, the Government plans to evacuate 2,000,000 people crowded along the banks of the Thames, between Greenwich" and Putney. This was revealed in the' Kouse of Commons during the debate on the Air Raids Precautions Bin. In the last war, the River Thames proved to be the raiders' guiding line of attack, and London would again prove the first target in Britain. The Home Secretary, Sir Samuel Hoare, said that the Committee of Imperial Defence was examining a plan for the evacuation of inner London.
"I agree with those who say that the evacuation of London is the most important part of our programme," he said. "We have certain plans and we intend to make them more comprehensive. "I believe that whatever we do there will be the risk of raids, almost certainly loss of life, and terrible destruction of property. "One of the advantages of a debate of this kind is that it brings to the country's notice the realities of the problem and the horrors of future war. We should seek peace, and/allow no small matter to draw us into the horrible calamities of war."
