CRICKET "RECORD"
WEARERS OF SPECTACLES NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS Four wearers of spectacles in the Victoria v. New Zealand match—the New Zealanders, C. Parsloe, J. L. Kerr. W. A. Hadlee and D. A. Moloney—is perhaps a record in firstclass criqket. The case recalls three other fine players of the past who wore spectacles, Arthur Richardson, U. .A. Young and J. N. Crawford, states a writer in the Melbourne Herald. Arthur Richardson is still fresh In cricket memory as South Australia's and Australia's sound all-rounder. Tie fielded well despite his glasses. R. A. Young kept wickets for England in Test cricket despite spectacles! The third spectacled cricketer, J. N. Crawford, was a splendid all-rounder. A schoolmaster, he played for Surrey before coming to South Australia, where he played in the State side. Crawford figured in an extraordinary Australian innings when he went to New Zealand in 1913-14 with Arthur Sims* team. Playing a South Canterbury fifteen, Australia scored more than 900 runs in one day's play. Bill Ferguson, Australia's Official scorer and baggage man, who was with that team in New Zealand, states that the runs came so fast that he found great difficulty in recording them. The home scorer, not so fast as "Fergie," was forced to disregard the bowling analysis completely! Crawford scored 354, which included about 14- sixes and 44 fours. In an eighth wicket partnership with the great Victor Trumper, 298 runs were added in 69 minutes. Twice, this pair put on 50 runs in 10 minutes, but this was bettered by the half-century in nine minutes, while Crawford was associated with Noble.
