LEMONS FROM AUCKLAND
SOUTH ISLAND SUPPLY BETTER SERVICE URGED (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. The ability (of Auckland citrus fruit growers to produce lemons com parable with the imported article and the need for an improved method of distribution to the South Island were commented upon by members of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. It was said that during the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce at Timaru last week Auckland lemons were being sold in Timaru at five for Is, whereas in Auckland they could be bought at 16 for Is, and some critical comment had ensued. Mr. W. R. Fee, the chairman, said that at the conference southern delegates had expressed their dissatisfaction with the local prices of Dominion lemons and compared their quality with that of the imported lemons. The matter should be taken up in the Auckland district as apparently a large proportion of lemons was being sent direct from the orchards to the shops without undergoing any process of curing. Mr. A. G. Lunn said that the industry was approaching the stage when it could give a full and good supply of lemons for the Dominion market, and it was the bounden duty of the council to support the many of whom had been struggling for years. The Government should take steps to see that a fair quantity was sent to the South Island at reasonable prices.
