MEMORIAL TREES
CENTENNIAL PLANTINGS SUGGESTION BY -MINISTER STATE SUBSIDY SCHEME Discussing with a deputation in Wellington the question of memorials for the New Zealand centennial, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, suggested that even where a centennial memorial took the, form of a monument, museum, art gallery, community hall or centre, or sports ground or play area, it (should he surrounded by ’a park or licit or be approached by a grove or avenue of memorial trees, natives for preference. A hundred years or more later these would be considered a living reminder of what New Zealanders celebrated in 1940. The Minister commended to landowners the appeal of the GovernorGeneral that they make available areas of land for centennial plantings. He could imagine no more permanent manner in which individual landowners could commemorate their public spirit. The Government last year had decided to make available a sum . t approximately £150,000 by way cl subsidy on a pound for three pounds basis on moneys raised for local eentenial celebrations and memorials. In both cases applications had to be approved by the Government on recommendations made by various provincial centennial organisations and the national centennial committee. No applications would be considered unless forwarded through and recommended by the appropriate provincial organisation and the national committee.
