WAIROA HARBOUR BOARD

THE MONTHLY MEETING JUBILEE AVENUE TREES (Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa Harbour Board met yesterday morning, those present being Messrs. V. E. Winter, chairman, J. Corkill, F. L. Joblin, J. M. Taylor, vl. G. M. Williams, 11. L. Harker and A. T. Carroll. The Marine Department wrote regarding an alteration to the lights at Waikokopu, one now being permanent. The wharfinger was asked to report on the rock buoy at Waikokopu, it being found impossible to keep it there. The Wairoa County Council and Borough Council wrote advising they were in accord with a conference being held to arrange a scheme for the jqint entertainment of visiting Ministers. The chairman and Mr. Corkill were appointed the board's delegates. It was decided to again apply to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Gisborne, to give information concerning the position of the rentals on Taramarama. —It was stated that timber was being sold off these properties. The Harbour Boards' Employers' Union wrote giving reasons why the board should continue to be a member. —It was decided to continue as a member. Waikokopu Facilities The secretary of the 'Waikokopu Waterside Workers' Union asked for a hot-point and electric heaters a"t the wharf shed and accommodation house. ,—The board considered that neither was warranted, there being a good fireplace at the house. The pilot, Captain Knight, reported that arrivals in September totalled five, and departures five. The bar was workable on nine clays, with the channel running to the west and an average depth of sft. at high water. He took ill on September 2 and was off duty until September 27, when he went on duty again. During his absence Mr. J. Blake carried on the duties of pilot. The wharfinger, Mr. H. S. Hutchinson, reported that Waikokopu had been unworkable for four days during the month. The beacons had been painted and the contract finished satisfactorily. The diver had been engaged to make an inspection of the piles in the wharf. The chairman reported that the trees at the Jubilee avenue were making good progress, but cattle had knocked about the supports at the far end. He had had the grass chipped round them. All but three were alive. Mr. Harker said he wa"s glad to hear this report in view of some sarcastic reports. It was decided that the works committee should get ready for carrying out the breastwork repairs in Marine parade, and also meet the Borough Council's delegates.
