Porourangi

The Porouangi Women's Institute held its August meeting at Tikapa. A good attendance was recorded as this was the first women's institute meeting to be held in this village. Owing to the slippery condition of the Tikapa road the members had a hard task to stick to their saddles, but their keenness overcame all difficulties.

The president, who presided, spoke on the good work being carried out by all women's institutes on the Coast, not only helping the womenfolk, but Jtlso the children's welfare and urged that more members from this village should join in the work of the institute.

A new member, Mrs. S. Paringatai, was enrolled. Suggestions for a women's institute ball were made, the date being fixed for October 22. Mrs. Waititi mentioned that word had been received concerning the revival of the Maori councils for each village, and this would be a great help to all.

Under the management of Mrs. Tamahori the sales table did good business. The hope was expresses that three sick members, Mrs. Hona, Mrs. Hughes and Mrs. Grant, inmates of the Waiapu Hospital, Te Puia, would make speedly recoveries.

The competitions resulted:—Knitted jabot—Mesdames Kani and Te Kawa, tie, 1; Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Paringatai, tie, 3. Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Matanuku, tfe, 5. Assorted biscuits. —Mrs. Tamahori, 1; Mrs. Te Kawa, 2; Mrs. Matanuku, 3. Maori art—Seniors (only entry): Mrs. Tamahori, 1. Juniors: Mrs. Sheriff, 1; Mrs. Matanuku, 2; Mrs. Te Kawa, 3. Gardening. —Bulbs: Mrs. Te Kawa, 1; Mrs. Matanuku, 2. To the strains of "Pokarekare ana" and many other favourite records a pleasant social half-hour was spent In community singing. On behalf of the hostesses, Mrs. Mills, Mrs. Banks, and Mrs. Webb, Mrs. Kani thanked all members for their attendance.
