DArcv Heeney, the Poverty Bay welterweight champion, was born in Gisborne on April 22, 191 G, and revived his early education at the Gisborne Marist's'School, where he first learnt the rudiments of the noble art. From Gisborne he went to the Sacred Heart College at Auckland, and while attending that college he won his weight championship twice and on the occasion was awarded the Macloy Medal for the most scientific boxer of the school. Since returning to Gisborne he has made steady progress and the onlydefeat he suffered here was by M. Callaghan. Heeney has endeavoured to get a return match against this fighter, but so far has not been successful. His first appearance at a New Zealand championship was in 1935, when he was defeated by Jack Davis, Hastings, on points. Davis subsequently defeated him again at Hastings. They met for the third time at the Park racecourse, Gisborne, a few months ago, when Heeney had a somewhat easy victory on points.

Last year he got as far as the semifinals of the welterweight division, to be beaten on points by W. G. Parris, who went on to win the final. At the time Heeney was not in the best of condition to fight and on his return to Gisborne was confined to his bed for some time on account of the illness that he contracted prior to fighting. All followers of the noble art will wish him success on his third effort to win a title, and also the best of luck to the other three representatives. Since leafing school Heeney has engaged in 18 fights, winning 14 and losing four.
